Discover the Pooley Butcher’s Hill Pinot Noir 2024, a vibrant and complex expression of Tasmania’s cool-climate terroir. Crafted from carefully selected grapes grown on the steep, iron-rich slopes of Richmond’s historic vineyard, this wine offers a joyful blend of rich fruit, herbal nuances, and refined tannins—promising both immediate enjoyment and excellent aging potential.

Key Information and Highlights:

  • Region: Tasmania, Australia
  • Vintage: 2024
  • Alcohol Content: 13.3%
  • Volume: 750ml
  • Ingredients: From the steep north-facing slopes of the Butcher’s Hill Vineyard, established in 2003. The vintage benefited from an unusually warm winter, leading to early budburst and high-quality fruit. The grapes were handpicked with 25% whole bunch inclusion, fermented on skins for about 10 days, followed by 8 days of post-fermentation maceration. The wine matured for 10 months in French oak barrels, with 35% new oak of medium toast and tight grain.

Producer Background:
Pooley Wines, a family-owned Tasmanian winery established in 1985, is renowned for its dedication to expressing vineyard site and vintage character. The Butcher’s Hill Vineyard’s unique steep slope, iron-rich soils, and ample sunlight create ideal conditions for producing complex, structured Pinot Noir. Pooley’s meticulous approach to winemaking emphasizes balance, finesse, and aging potential—qualities that shine through in this exceptional vintage.

Flavour Profile:

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with a hint of purple.
  • Nose: Dominant characters of cocoa, ripe dark cherry, and herbaceous notes of sage, oregano, and lavender, layered with earthy hints and a prickling of green peppercorn.
  • Palate: Joyful and vibrant, with lifted notes of cherry, citrus peel, and allspice. Velvety tannins and a firm acid line drive the long, elegant finish, which reveals hints of liquorice, cardamom, and dark chocolate (around 90%). The wine’s structure and aromatic complexity suggest excellent potential for cellaring.

Food Pairings:
Enjoy the Pooley Butcher’s Hill Pinot Noir with:

  • Roasted or grilled poultry and duck, complementing its herbal and cherry notes.
  • Mushroom dishes and hearty vegetarian stews that enhance its earthy character.
  • Aged cheeses, especially hard cheeses with nutty profiles.

Cellaring:
While superb now, its balance of fruit and structure indicates it will age gracefully for 5-10 years, developing further layers of complexity.

Experience the Pooley Butcher’s Hill Pinot Noir for its vibrant energy, layered aromatics, and refined tannic structure—an outstanding expression of Tasmania’s finest Pinot Noir, crafted for both immediate pleasure and future reward.
