This whisky is a truly unique style that harkens back to the earliest whiskies ever produced. In those days, there was no filtration of the wash beyond allowing larger sediments to settle at the bottom, leaving suspended smaller particles, leftover starches, and other molecules to be distilled. Additionally, the only heating technology available was direct-flame distillation, which contributed to distinct flavours. Imagine baking a cake directly on charcoal, where the bottom caramelizes and smokes slightly, resulting in beautiful smoky caramel notes like no other.

Please note: This is not a peated whisky! The gentle and relatively short-lived smokiness comes from a completely different chemical reaction. The main reaction at play is the Maillard Reaction, occurring between amino acids and sugars. This is the same reaction responsible for the rich flavours we love in roasted coffee, baked bread, and grilled meats.

Key Information:

  • Distillery: Belgrove Distillery
  • Type: Rye Whiskey
  • ABV: 42.5%
  • Volume: 500ml Bottle

Flavour Profile:

  • Color: Beautiful ruby.
  • Nose: Incredible sweetness and caramel notes, with hints of the best porridge aroma you’ve ever encountered. The elegance of the French oak elevates it even further—this is a nose like no other!
  • Palate: A full-bodied whisky that defies its ABV! It's chewy, sweet, and smoky, with deep notes of reduced figs. The use of unmalted grains contributes beautifully to the flavour, unveiling a side of rye whisky we’ve never come across before. The sweetness and light smoky notes linger for a long, satisfying finish.

Conclusion:

Belgrove Distillery Rye Whiskey is not just a spirit; it's a return to traditional whisky-making techniques that emphasize complex flavours and craftsmanship. Experience this exquisite expression and discover the remarkable journey of flavours in every sip.
