A legacy wine first commercialised in the late 1950s, St Henri is the classic counterpoint to Grange—crafted for purity and fruit expression, with zero new oak use. The 2022 vintage upholds a steadfast tradition of restraint, elegance and structure.
Blend & Maturation
-
Varietal: 96 % Shiraz, 4 % Cabernet Sauvignon
-
Region: Sourced from South Australia’s Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway
-
Maturation: Aged 12–14 months in large, seasoned vats which impart minimal oak influence, emphasising fruit purity and terroir-driven character.
Colour, Nose & Palate
-
Colour: Saturated deep plum-red with hints of violet.
-
Aroma: Distinctively St Henri—vivid, lift-driven notes of wild berries, raspberry and boysenberry gelato, intermingled with floral violets, dark chocolate, cinnamon tea-cake and marinated olive/brine. Subtle savoury layers of coffee bean, herbs and spice add complexity.
-
Palate: Plush yet refined, the wine delivers blackberry, cassis and red plum fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins. Bay leaf, smoky tobacco, and herbal spice provide savory depth, while acid and tannin structure ensure tension and lift.
Structure & Aging Potential
-
Acidity & Tannins: Finely woven tannin grip, with tannins that anchor the fruit then release in a layered, sapid fashion. Balanced acid lifts the palate and supports longevity.
-
Peak Drinking Window: Drink fairly young to enjoy its vibrant fruit, or cellar until 2050 for more savoury tertiary complexity and supple evolution.
Accolades
-
Earned 98 points from critics such as Andrew Caillard MW; 97–98 points from Tyson Stelzer, Lisa Cardelli, Ray Jordan, and Huon Hooke. Critics hail it as one of the most powerful and harmonious vintages yet.
Suggested Pairings
This wine’s savory richness and structured profile make it a perfect match for grilled lamb cutlets, slow-roast beef, venison or aged hard cheeses. Earthy sides such as roasted root vegetables or char‑grilled eggplant complement its herbal spice and depth.
