Discover the 2023 Pooley Butcher’s Hill 'Oronsay' Pinot Noir, a richly aromatic and finely structured expression of Tasmania’s cool-climate terroir. Crafted from hand-harvested MV6 clone grapes from the steep slopes of Richmond’s historic vineyard, this wine offers a complex array of deep cherry, dark strawberry, and subtle spice notes, with a promising evolution as it matures.

Key Information and Highlights:

  • Region: Tasmania, Australia
  • Vintage: 2023
  • Alcohol Content: 13%
  • Volume: 750ml
  • Ingredients: From the steep, iron-rich slopes of Butcher’s Hill Vineyard, established in 2003. The 2023 season was challenging, marked by wind and rain during flowering, resulting in lower yields but ultimately producing high-quality grapes with slow, steady development of flavor, acid, sugar, and tannins. The wine was carefully crafted to reflect the vintage’s subtle complexity and finesse.

Producer Background:
Pooley Wines, a family-owned estate since 1985, is renowned for its dedication to capturing Tasmania’s unique cool-climate expression through meticulous vineyard practices and gentle winemaking. The steep slopes, ferricrete soils, and long sunlight hours of Butcher’s Hill create ideal conditions for producing complex, robust Pinot Noir. The 2023 vintage showcases their expertise in turning challenging conditions into wines of depth and character.

Flavour Profile:

  • Appearance: Bright ruby with hints of garnet.
  • Nose: Rich notes of deep cherry, dark strawberry, and subtle spices, layered with complex dried fruits, herbs, and evolving aromas of forest floor and cured game meats.
  • Palate: Firm tannins at the back are harmonized by soft, expressive fruit flavors at the front. The wine offers a balanced structure, with a lingering, refined finish that promises further development and complexity over time.

Food Pairings:
Enjoy the Pooley 'Oronsay' Pinot Noir with:

  • Roasted or grilled game meats, duck, or lamb that match its earthy and spicy nuances.
  • Mushroom dishes, hearty stews, or aged cheeses that enhance its complexity.
  • Charcuterie platters for a refined tasting experience.

Cellaring:
While delicious now, its structure and depth suggest it will age gracefully for 5-10 years, developing additional layers of aroma and flavor as it matures.

Experience the 2023 Pooley Butcher’s Hill 'Oronsay' Pinot Noir for its expressive bouquet, elegant tannic backbone, and potential for long-term cellaring—an outstanding reflection of Tasmania’s nuanced Pinot Noir heritage.
