Discover the 2023 Pooley JRD Syrah, a richly aromatic and gracefully structured wine that exemplifies Tasmania’s potential for producing long-lived, complex Syrah. With bountiful notes of white pepper, bramble, and violets, this wine offers both immediate appeal and remarkable aging potential—promising to develop beautifully over the next two to three decades.

Key Information and Highlights:

  • Region: Tasmania, Australia
  • Vintage: 2023
  • Alcohol Content: 13.5%
  • Volume: 750ml
  • Ingredients: From the Cooinda Vale Vineyard, established in 1985, located at 80-100m altitude in a protected, continental setting. The challenging 2023 season was characterized by wind and rain during flowering, leading to lower yields but high-quality fruit. The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, fermented with regular pump-overs, and matured for 10 months in Vallaurine barrels, with 50% new oak and natural malolactic fermentation.

Producer Background:
Pooley Wines, a family-owned estate since 1985, is renowned for crafting elegant, site-expressive wines that highlight Tasmania’s cool climate. The Cooinda Vale Vineyard’s unique soils and climate conditions produce fruit of finesse and complexity. Their approach emphasizes careful vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar, resulting in wines with both immediate charm and aging potential.

Flavour Profile:

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with violet hints.
  • Nose: Inviting aromas of white pepper, bramble, and violets, with underlying layers of dried herbs and subtle spice.
  • Palate: The white pepper persists on the palate, complemented by firm tannins and crisp acidity that provide structure and balance. The wine is long and lingering, with evolving flavors and the promise of continued development over the next 20-30 years.

Food Pairings:
Enjoy the Pooley JRD Syrah with:

  • Rich grilled meats such as lamb or beef, which match its spice and structure.
  • Roasted vegetables or charcuterie boards with cured meats and hard cheeses.
  • Game dishes that highlight its savory complexity.

Cellaring:
While enjoyable now, its firm tannic backbone and vibrant acidity suggest it will reward patience, developing further layers of aroma and flavor over the next two to three decades.

Experience the 2023 Pooley JRD Syrah for its expressive aromatics, impeccable balance, and exceptional aging potential—a true testament to Tasmania’s capacity to produce world-class Syrah.
