Batches #490-491
Artfully blended to enjoy with a fine cigar. A combination of award-winning Joseph Magnus Bourbon and 11 and 18-year-old whiskeys to assume bold, rich aromas of tobacco, spice, leather, vanilla, blanched almonds, and toffee. The Armagnac cask finish lends fruity notes of fig, prune, and dried apricot.
Tasting Notes:
Baby Bad Axe and The Firedawgs Batches #483-491 - "These batches feature a cornucopia of deep, dark aromas ranging from Italian black walnut liqueur (Nocino), sticky date cake with toffee sauce, rum raisin ice cream, and dried fruit compote. The palate delivers what the nose promises, with further notes of grilled figs drizzled with aged balsamic vinegar, Devil’s Food cake, muddled mint, a whiff of aromatic pipe tobacco, and brandied cherries in syrup. The finish is long and luscious, with brooding notes of dried tea leaves, black currant jam, and wild prunes in Armagnac syrup (Pruneau d’Agen)." - Nancy Fraley
Reviews:
"It tastes like marshmallow fluff with complexity which is insane like a really um like layered nose ... that is the best Magnus i've ever had, hands down ... this is a standout." (Batch #490 - Same Batch Range) - Bourbon Junkies
"A decade later, and over 500 batches created, it is only getting better. (For comparison, I tasted a batch No. 2 I still had from back in 2017 and found this modern release superior.) This release was built on 10-year-old MGP bourbon, 17-year-old Barton’s high-rye bourbon, and 20-year-old high-rye MGP bourbon. It’s deep and rich on the palate, with notes of sticky toffee pudding, Nocino liqueur, wallet leather, and something just a bit savory, too. Whether paired alongside a smoke, or perhaps dessert, this remains a sui generis pour every serious whiskey drinker should try one day. If a decade ago its two-bill price tag seemed a bit high, today it is downright reasonable." - (Batch #489 - Same Batch Range) David Thomas Tao, Vinepair (95 Points)
"A beautiful whiskey, masterfully constructed." - Drew Beard, Drinkhacker (100 Points)
"This is a complex bourbon. It's good in its own right, but truly really reveals itself if you drink it alongside a nice cigar. What could seem like a little bit too much in terms of personality becomes exactly enough when you pair it with cigar smoke. This is bourbon with a backbone, complex and moody and daring you to pull your best cigars out of the humidor." - Scott Bernard Nelson, The Whiskey Wash (90 Points)
" This pour accomplishes exactly what it set out to do: provide a robust, exotic and enjoyable whiskey experience. I have certainly never tasted anything quite like it and revel in my opportunity to enjoy it with good company moving forward!" - Nick Anderson, Amongst The Whiskey (90 Points)
"This legacy distiller was revived by the founder’s descendant in 2015. Its Cigar Blend (in various batches) was created by master blender Nancy Fraley. The nose offers cherry, red berries, muted rye spice, vanilla and whipped cream. The palate has more red berry notes, fruity but also savory, with spice, pepper, and tobacco. A smooth yet complex finish. A great amalgamation of flavors, and yes, it would go very well with a cigar." - David Fleming, Whisky Advocate (92 Points)
"Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend is a really good bourbon. It offers a barrage of unique traits which culminate nicely into a unique flavor..." - Nick Beiter, Breaking Bourbon (Well Above Average)
