As we celebrate 25 years of the Ardbeg Committee in 2025, we venture further into space once more… Behold the immense magnetism of Ardbeg’s mash tun. Responsible for converting our malted barley into fermentable sugars (mashing), all life at Ardbeg revolves around the tun. This time, however, it has become a force to be reckoned with, as we concentrate its power to materialise a new frontier of flavour for Ardbeg.
Experimenting with a process called ‘high gravity mashing’, our intrepid whisky creators vastly decreased the amount of water in the mash tun, then packed more grain into the mix than ever before. Crushing and compressing every drop of liquid, this unconventional mash has magnified the intensity of flavour-active acetate esters. Ramping up the density of wort to astronomical levels, we’ve drawn in fruitier, sweeter flavours from the deepest corners of the mash tun.
Taste the emergence of an awe-inspiringly fruity Ardbeg. Notes of muscovado sugar swirl alongside searing aromas of ripening barley and toasted sourdough bread, while sweet peat smoke orbits ripe tropical fruits. Plunge your palate into a crushing mouthfeel that implodes in on itself with intensely rich, creamy flavours.
Tasting Notes:
Aroma: An explosion of fruity, estery notes, reminiscent of smoked bubblegum, fuse with whiffs of ripening barley and toasted sourdough bread. A splash of water reveals dense, sweet, and aromatic peat smoke, accompanied by gently smoked tropical fruits.
Taste: A rich, creamy mouthfeel drifts into sharp, sooty and spicy notes of creosote, aniseed, and clove. Tempered by the distinct sweetness of muscovado sugar, robust woody notes orbit rich charcoal.
Finish: Finally, in an almost infinite finish, earthy peat moss fuses with sizzling bonfire embers.
"This year’s Ardbeg Day release was created with “high gravity” mashing, using less water and more grain in the mash tun to intensify the flavor profile. There’s rich, sweet, and flavorful peat and grilled meats on the nose. Lots of fruit sweetness on the palate, fresh apples, apricots, and vanilla cream. On the finish, excellent length and vanilla sweetness. Great balance and texture throughout, very light and easy to drink, and well-integrated with layers of depth." - David Fleming, Whisky Advocate (94 Points)
"I’ve had plenty of fruit-heavy Ardbeg expressions before, but this one is definitely deep in the spectrum, the palate almost syrupy with its big notes of pear and banana, laced with caramel and cotton candy. The ultra-sweet bubble gum theme continues on the unctuous body, while the finish comes across as surprisingly underdeveloped, showcasing notes of green banana and more tinned pears, the fruit salad becoming a bit simplistic. A chewy caramel flan quality endures on the conclusion." - Christopher Null, Drinkhacker (88 Points)
"Ardbeg has hit a new high for me. I thought last year’s Ardbeg Day release was a knockout, but this scotch takes it to another level — or should we say, “defies gravity.” A memorable combination of elegance and danger, this scotch is going to stay with me for a long time. Brava, Ardbeg!" - Cynthia Merstern, T8ke (90 Points)
