About Us

The beauty of Five Geese spans across 32 Hectares of vineyards located in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia.

Nestled in the north-eastern end of the Willunga basin, Blewitt Springs lies about 180m above sea level. This slightly higher elevation provides a cooler climate than nearby McLaren Vale and Willunga. With cooler temperatures and moderating afternoon sea breezes, the grapes grown here enjoy a long, even ripening season.

Vintage in Blewitt Springs is often some two to three weeks later than the rest of the district. These extra weeks give the fruit time to develop more complex flavour ripeness, without the excessive baumes found in warmer areas. The grapes develop a beautiful balance of flavour, acidity, and sugar, which then translate into complex, but not overly alcoholic wines.

The Five Geese Shiraz is sourced from Blewitt Springs vineyard. The soil is deep sand over clay and is minimally irrigated from a small amount of available surface water.

The Five Geese Grenache is hand-picked from the dry grown, old bush Grenache vines. These gnarly old vines produce a very intensely flavoured Grenache. These vines are some of the oldest in the district.

Five Geese also has vines near McLaren Flat (located at the eastern end of the valley) and from here we source our Cabernet and Nero d'Avola. The deep alluvial iron-rich soils of the vineyard imparts vibrant textures and flavours to the fruit.

The company’s underlying philosophy is to promote itself by producing premium wines that are recognised as excellent value for money.

Wine making and tasting notes

9 months in second use oak hogsheads. This will be a wine to behold in 10 years, for its balance is perfect, and that is only the beginning.

James Halliday Review 94 Silver

80/20%, the grenache from old bush vines, part whole bunch fermentation on skins 5 days, the shiraz on skins 7 days, matured for 9 months in used oak. Marvellous colour for grenache (even with some shiraz), the vines 80yo and going strong; the bouquet is complex and truffly, the palate surging with life and strength. This will be a wine to behold in 10 years, for its balance is perfect, and that is only the beginning.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour

A very attractive deep crimson red., with a slight purple hue.
  • Aroma

This wine exhibits the distinct Grenache perfume. There are concentrated rose petals, plum and black currant and there are hints of chocolate and liquorice. The nose is both complex & interesting & there are signs of barrel maturation without any obvious oak.
  • Palate

There are ripe red berry flavours with the warmth of the dry grown Grenache showing as plum and liquorice with cumin & pepper spices. The palate is long and lingering and the Shiraz integrates seamlessly with the Grenache The tannins are soft and there is a good mouth feel.
