About Us

The beauty of Five Geese spans across 32 Hectares of vineyards located in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia.

Nestled in the north-eastern end of the Willunga basin, Blewitt Springs lies about 180m above sea level. This slightly higher elevation provides a cooler climate than nearby McLaren Vale and Willunga. With cooler temperatures and moderating afternoon sea breezes, the grapes grown here enjoy a long, even ripening season.

Vintage in Blewitt Springs is often some two to three weeks later than the rest of the district. These extra weeks give the fruit time to develop more complex flavour ripeness, without the excessive baumes found in warmer areas. The grapes develop a beautiful balance of flavour, acidity, and sugar, which then translate into complex, but not overly alcoholic wines.

The Five Geese Shiraz is sourced from Blewitt Springs vineyard. The soil is deep sand over clay and is minimally irrigated from a small amount of available surface water.

The Five Geese Grenache is hand-picked from the dry grown, old bush Grenache vines. These gnarly old vines produce a very intensely flavoured Grenache. These vines are some of the oldest in the district.

Five Geese also has vines near McLaren Flat (located at the eastern end of the valley) and from here we source our Cabernet and Nero d'Avola. The deep alluvial iron-rich soils of the vineyard imparts vibrant textures and flavours to the fruit.

The company’s underlying philosophy is to promote itself by producing premium wines that are recognised as excellent value for money.

With ripe berry fruit enhanced and enriched by whole bunch fermentation. This is a complex, savoury style similar to a cool-climate Pinot Noir. Perhaps James Irvine was right many years ago when he called McLaren Vale Grenache the Pinot d ‘Fleurieu!

  • Colour

A very attractive bright crimson purple.
  • Aroma

Lifted, rich ripe Grenache fruit, pure and youthful; typical of this vineyard. It also has a distinctive dried herb character that adds complexity.
  • Palate

Soft, juicy, open palate, with lingering fennel and aniseed. Very easy to drink.

Notes

  • The Indian File is made in a less traditional manner. Some whole-bunch fermentation is used, very little oak maturation and released early, this wine showcases the distinctive fruit from this Blewitt Springs vineyard.

Variety: Grenache

Region: Blewitt Springs

Vine Age: 50 years

Winemaking and tasting notes

Sourced from Blewitt Springs wild bush, dry grown 50+ years old vineyard, 9 months in second hand French oak, 150 dozen made. Lively floral, raspberry with hint of dark fruit and white pepper.
