Nikka Whisky purchased the Ben Nevis Distillery in 1989 and have been using components in many Nikkas Whiskies since.  This release from Nikka has aromas of pineapples, apples, blackcurrant, pears and leafy mint. As a sound introduction to the Oloroso matured genre, this is hard to beat. The sherry character comes through in high definition - especially on the palate with intense flavours of walnut and date cake, mixed nuts and dried fruits while tangy Seville orange and vibrant spices lift the finish. Cocoa, salted hazelnuts, new leather and drying astringency follow in the aftertaste. It could be better integrated, but it fares well against many more expensive Scottish equivalents. This particular edition was allowed a period in Pedro Ximénez casks, so if you like the thought of dried fruits mixed in with some cakey notes, you should find plenty to like here - starting with the bouquet.
