It has been bottled at natural cask strength of 57.0% and has a surprisingly peaty and almost old style HP profile with plenty dry herbal and medical notes with loads of coastal freshness. Paul John's Christmas Editions not only vary in their presentation every year, they also get matured in different ways. The 2022 edition, for example, was finished in ex-bourbon, brandy, and peated Oloroso sherry casks. This, the seventh in the series, employs less cask types but yields a flavour that is just as complex as past expressions (according to the distillery). As a sound introduction to the Oloroso matured genre, this is hard to beat. The sherry character comes through in high definition - especially on the palate with intense flavours of walnut and date cake, mixed nuts and dried fruits while tangy Seville orange and vibrant spices lift the finish. Cocoa, salted hazelnuts, new leather and drying astringency follow in the aftertaste. It could be better integrated, but it fares well against many more expensive Scottish equivalents.
