White Wine

White wine is a wine made from grapes that have had their skins removed prior to fermentation. These grapes are sometimes pressed and the juice is allowed to ferment on its own. Unlike red wine, white wine does not contain any grape skin cells or colour pigments, resulting in a blanc de noir (blanket of black) on the surface of the wine. The colour of white wine is usually straw- or light-coloured, and it has a milder flavour than red wine. White wine is often served cold, and it can be used in a variety of dishes.

The History of White Wine

White wine has a long and interesting history. It is believed that white wine was first created in the Middle East over 2,500 years ago. White wine was originally made from fermented grape juice that had been drained of all colour. In the early days, white wine was mainly used as a beverage for the nobility. Over time, however, white wine has become more popular and is now enjoyed by all types of people. There are many different types of white wine, and each has its own unique flavour and history. Some of the most famous types of white wine include chardonnay, pinot noir, and Riesling.

How is it Made?

White wine is made from grapes that are both white and fully ripe. The grapes are picked when they are ripe but not overripe, meaning they have a slight sweetness to them. Once the grapes are picked, they are immediately transported to the winery. There, the grapes are crushed and pumped with oxygen to stop the fermentation process. The wine is then placed into oak barrels for ageing. The barrels can be new or used, but new barrels have a lower sulfur content which gives white wines their characteristic flavour. After ageing, the wine is bottled and ready to drink! White wine can be enjoyed on its own or paired with food.

What Goes Well with White Wine?

As white wine can be served chilled or at room temperature, it goes well with a variety of dishes. Here are a few suggestions for what goes well with white wine:

  • Cheesy potatoes: Add some extra cheese to your mashed potatoes and top them with roasted garlic instead of butter. This takes the dish up a notch without overpowering the wine.
  • Grilled beef: Grill up some beefsteak and serve it with a fresh green salad and creamy white wine dressing. The sweetness of the beef and the acidity of the wine will perfectly balance each other out.
  • Roasted vegetables: Toss some roasted vegetables (carrots, zucchini, mushrooms) with olive oil, salt, pepper, and red wine vinegar to create a delicious side dish that goes well with any type of white wine.

If you’re looking for a versatile wine that can be enjoyed at any event or dinner, look no further than white wine. Plus, many white wines are available in a variety of flavours, so you can find one that suits your tastes.

The 2021 growing season started well with a wet winter and the wettest spring for 10 years encouraging the vines to grow good canopies and a good number of bunches. Summer was unusually cool and dry allowing long even ripening for the grapes, especially shiraz, to develop intense flavours and fine tannins. The mesmerising fragrance flows intoxicatingly from glass. Think the white blossoms of jasmine and jonquils entwined with sweet musk and exotic lychees. The sublimely luscious palate brings memories of glacéd pears and old-fashioned lemon bonbons. Notes of citrus bring balance and encourage just one more sip.
