Gewurztraminer

If you're considering another wine for your next date night or have someone over for Sunday brunch, then Gewurztraminer is for you!

Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape variety that is grown in the Rheinhessen region of Germany and Austria. The wine produced from this grape is typically light-bodied and has a fruity flavour with hints of citrus and flowers.

How was the grape discovered?

Gewurztraminer, a bluish-green wine made from the rare grape Gewurztraminer, was first discovered in the Mosel area of Germany in 1577 by a man named Johann Jacob Welser. It is said that he tasted the wine and exclaimed that it had a unique flavour.

The grape Gewurztraminer is named for the town of Gewurzheim in Rheinhessen, Germany where it was first grown. In 1814, Emperor Francis I of Austria awarded Count von Esterhazy the rights to cultivate and produce Gewurztraminer. Today, Gewurztraminer is produced in many countries around the world.

What is it best paired with?

One of the most tantalising wines to pair with food is the Gewurztraminer. Known for its bright, aromatic flavours and fruity-tart finish, this wine is perfect for light fare such as salads or sushi.

Here are a few more pairing ideas to get you started:

  • A hearty and savoury dish like roasted chicken or beef with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables.
  • A sweet and fruity dessert like chocolate cake or caramelised bananas with whipped cream.
  • An easygoing summer salad with mixed greens, roasted tomatoes, cucumbers, and crumbled blue cheese.

If you're looking for a wine to enjoy over dinner or during an elegant evening out with friends, consider trying Gewurztraminer as your beverage of choice.
