HASTWELL & LIGHTFOOT

For over 30 years Hastwell and Lightfoot have grown grapes and made wine in South Australia’s McLaren Vale. Their 16 hectares of vines are located on the northern, deep sand slopes of McLaren Vale along Foggo Road. H&L is a family-owned boutique winery producing award-winning premium wines since 1988.

FAT’n SKINNY by H&L dates back to the late 1980s when co-founders Martin and Jill Lightfoot purchased a porcelain figure in Bellagio, Italy. This figurine initially surmised the H&L approach to this range of wines in that they are well-crafted, striking while reminding us to not take ourselves too seriously. The Hastwell and Lightfoot families used a portrayal of this figurine in their original label in 1990 and throughout the McLaren Vale region in South Australia.

However, as is the case with many new brands the H&L brand and label continued to evolve and by the mid 1990’s had settled on our traditional yet distinctive yellow label with two blokes on either side of the vineyard.

Around the turn of the century, H&L’s desire to introduce a new range of wines that were affordable, easy to drink and fun was being fuelled by the increasing volumes of wine being produced from our vineyard and our United Kingdom distributor's desire to show wine from the McLaren Vale region. So, the H&L team blended up some wines to make them easy to drink, slapped on an old label, and sent some samples to the UK. The UK loved it and immediately named the characters FAT’n SKINNY. Martin Lightfoot to this day still thinks the UK may have been poking fun at Mark and himself when they named the wine. With the UK falling in love with the brand the name stuck, and the original H&L image with the FAT’n SKINNY label found its place in the H&L range.

Today the wine continues to evolve with FAT’n SKINNY now having 5 wines in this range. The style and varieties change from year to year, but the goal remains the same. Blend a wine up, make it drinkable from day 1 and get it out to homes, dining room tables, bars, and bottle shops. It is considered a go-to wine when you just looking to consume 750ml of fun and is currently sold in Canada, China, Germany, the UK, and Australia.

Today many glasses around the world are filled with our FAT’n SKINNY wines and it is just what you are looking for when you want 750ml of fun.
