Whisky

Which Whisky Is Good?

Ask any whisky enthusiast, and you’ll likely get a different answer each time. A "good" whisky doesn’t have to be expensive or rare. It’s one that delivers harmony, depth, and satisfaction, whether you're sipping it neat or mixing it into a cocktail. Smooth Irish blends like Jameson, sweet bourbons like Buffalo Trace, or easy-drinking Scotches such as Monkey Shoulder are often recommended as good starting points. They’re approachable, well-crafted, and widely available.

But for others, "good" might mean bold and smoky, like Laphroaig 10, or sweet and complex like a sherry-aged GlenDronach. It’s personal, and that’s the beauty of it.

Which Whisky Is Best?

This is the question that sparks endless debate. Is it the most expensive? The rarest? The most awarded?

The truth is, there’s no definitive answer. The best whisky depends on your taste, context, and preferences. That said, a few names consistently rise to the top in global rankings and enthusiast circles:

  • The Macallan 18 – Luxury in a glass

  • Yamazaki 18 – A refined Japanese masterpiece

  • Redbreast 12 – A standout Irish Single Pot Still

  • Pappy Van Winkle – The unicorn of American bourbon

But the best whisky for you might be the one that takes you by surprise, the one you share on a special night, or the one that simply makes you smile after a long day.

What Is Australia’s #1 Selling Whisky?

This is one of the most frequently searched whisky questions in Australia, and the answer might surprise you.

As of recent retail sales data, Johnnie Walker Red Label consistently ranks as Australia’s #1 selling whisky. Its popularity is driven by brand recognition, affordability, and versatility, making it a staple in both home bars and hospitality venues.

Among Australian-made whiskies, Starward, particularly the Starward Nova, has earned critical acclaim and is gaining traction both locally and internationally. The rise of local distilleries means Australia’s whisky scene is no longer just importing; it's now proudly exporting quality whisky with a uniquely Australian flavour.

A World of Whisky: Regional Styles That Define the Spirit

Whisky changes with its environment, and regional identity is part of its magic:

  • Scotland: The spiritual home of whisky, from Speyside’s elegant malts to Islay’s peated powerhouses.

  • India: Triple-distilled and smooth, known for blends and distinctive Single Pot Still whiskies.

  • United States: Bourbon, rye, and Tennessee whiskey lead a bold, sweet, and spicy charge.

  • Japan: Inspired by Scotland, refined by precision, elegant, balanced, and award-winning.

  • Canada: Blended, light, and easy to sip, Canadian whiskies are subtle and versatile.

  • Australia: A rising force, with distilleries in Tasmania, Victoria, and beyond producing unique, terroir-driven drams.

Whisky Isn’t Just Tasted, It’s Experienced

The flavour of whisky is shaped not only by ingredients and barrels, but by story and setting. A dram by a winter fire tastes different from one sipped by the sea. The same whisky shared among friends transforms with conversation and context.

Food pairing, tasting rituals, and even collection trends are part of the broader culture. And yes, while collectors chase investment-grade bottles, the true heart of whisky lies in drinking it, appreciating the moment, not just the label.

Which Whisky Is Right for You?

Whether you’re searching “what is the best whisky to buy?” or “which whisky is smoothest for beginners?”, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best whisky is the one that resonates with your palate and your story.

So explore. Taste broadly. Discover a smoky Scotch, a sweet bourbon, a floral Japanese pour, or a spicy rye, and let each bottle tell its tale.

In the end, the question isn’t “Which whisky is best?” but rather “Which whisky is best for you, right now?”

And that’s the kind of question worth pouring a glass to ponder.

Taste: There we go with that unique bitter-sweet overture where the oaks and barley appear joined at the hip; lovely soft oils and then a sharp jolt of blood orange citrus, which is removed by something more buttery and delicate. Finish: Long, elegant with the most intricate of fades with the oaks showing various bourbon then buttery characteristics; there is a trace of dark sugar and cocoa to help it along its way.

The palate is a journey, beginning with a burst of molasses sugar that gives way to intensifying peat, culminating in a dry, spicy finish. Variants such as Amrut Portonova and Single Cask add depth to this rich, complex profile, making it a must-experience for whisky enthusiasts.

Then more like con-fusion as that smoke on the nose turns into warming, full blown peat, but it far from gets its own way as a vague sherry trifle note (curious, seeing how there are no sherry butts involved) - the custard presumably is oaky vanilla - hammers home that barley - fruitiness to make for a bit of a...

Though the maturation takes place high up above the city, hot weather makes whisky mature faster in India than it does in Europe or the United States. The fraction lost to evaporation during ageing, known as the angels' share, is also higher in India, at 11–12%, as opposed to Scotland, where the annual evaporative loss is about 2%. Most Amrut whiskies are reportedly less than 6 years old, yet a steady stream of awards have been left in their wake. The company is now in the envious position of...

700mL @ 57.1% abv Nose: Instead of the usual biscuit aroma, we now get moist cake. And my word: is it fruity and spicy!! Love the freshly waxed oak floor, too. Brain-explodingly complex and multi-layered with one of the most intriguing sherry-style-bourbon-style marriages on the market. Taste: Cracking delivery and entirely unique in form. The structure is decidedly oak-based, but acts as no more than a skeleton from which the juicy sultana and spices drape. Salivating, too, as the barley kicks in powerfully. But the liquorice-orangey-honeycomb bourbon theme quietly shapes the flavour profile; the spices pulse and glow. Finish: Quite a...

A selection of cask strength expressions have recently become available for Australian whisky enthusiasts, and the quality is first rate, to the extent that these stand out as bargains on the world whisky stage. They are a revelation to almost anyone who tastes them. The present situation we're witnessing in India is in some ways akin to the early Japanese whisky industry. It remains a work in progress, and there are good reasons why it's taken decades to get this far. Prejudice usually breeds ignorance, and admittedly, there was a time when even we found the idea of a distillery in India entering the domain of luxury spirits...

In the Tamil dialect, Kadhambam means 'mixture' or 'combination'; Aptly named given this is matured in rum, sherry and brandy barrels resulting in a singular whisky. Tasting note: Polished copper. A densely packed aroma, as you come to expect from this distillery; a fusion of sweet spices, charry oak and nuttiness on the nose. Quite bound up. 3-4 minutes draws out a peaty aspect as smouldering cedar and burning pine cone (?) develop. Big but not overbearing with the weighty malt supported by lively peppers and dried fruit characteristcs in the mouth. As India is too tropical a climate for peat to develop, this expression is made using peated Scottish barley, from Bairds Malting near Inverness, distilled and matured in ex-Bourbon casks at Amrut Distillery in Bangalore. The new 46% Amruts are a very different proposition to the pleasant but unexciting original release. At the higher strength this 24ppm peated effort fairly fizzes along the tastebuds. This is excellent - hugely improved stuff from a distillery coming along in leaps and bounds.
