Whisky

Which Whisky Is Good?

Ask any whisky enthusiast, and you’ll likely get a different answer each time. A "good" whisky doesn’t have to be expensive or rare. It’s one that delivers harmony, depth, and satisfaction, whether you're sipping it neat or mixing it into a cocktail. Smooth Irish blends like Jameson, sweet bourbons like Buffalo Trace, or easy-drinking Scotches such as Monkey Shoulder are often recommended as good starting points. They’re approachable, well-crafted, and widely available.

But for others, "good" might mean bold and smoky, like Laphroaig 10, or sweet and complex like a sherry-aged GlenDronach. It’s personal, and that’s the beauty of it.

Which Whisky Is Best?

This is the question that sparks endless debate. Is it the most expensive? The rarest? The most awarded?

The truth is, there’s no definitive answer. The best whisky depends on your taste, context, and preferences. That said, a few names consistently rise to the top in global rankings and enthusiast circles:

  • The Macallan 18 – Luxury in a glass

  • Yamazaki 18 – A refined Japanese masterpiece

  • Redbreast 12 – A standout Irish Single Pot Still

  • Pappy Van Winkle – The unicorn of American bourbon

But the best whisky for you might be the one that takes you by surprise, the one you share on a special night, or the one that simply makes you smile after a long day.

What Is Australia’s #1 Selling Whisky?

This is one of the most frequently searched whisky questions in Australia, and the answer might surprise you.

As of recent retail sales data, Johnnie Walker Red Label consistently ranks as Australia’s #1 selling whisky. Its popularity is driven by brand recognition, affordability, and versatility, making it a staple in both home bars and hospitality venues.

Among Australian-made whiskies, Starward, particularly the Starward Nova, has earned critical acclaim and is gaining traction both locally and internationally. The rise of local distilleries means Australia’s whisky scene is no longer just importing; it's now proudly exporting quality whisky with a uniquely Australian flavour.

A World of Whisky: Regional Styles That Define the Spirit

Whisky changes with its environment, and regional identity is part of its magic:

  • Scotland: The spiritual home of whisky, from Speyside’s elegant malts to Islay’s peated powerhouses.

  • India: Triple-distilled and smooth, known for blends and distinctive Single Pot Still whiskies.

  • United States: Bourbon, rye, and Tennessee whiskey lead a bold, sweet, and spicy charge.

  • Japan: Inspired by Scotland, refined by precision, elegant, balanced, and award-winning.

  • Canada: Blended, light, and easy to sip, Canadian whiskies are subtle and versatile.

  • Australia: A rising force, with distilleries in Tasmania, Victoria, and beyond producing unique, terroir-driven drams.

Whisky Isn’t Just Tasted, It’s Experienced

The flavour of whisky is shaped not only by ingredients and barrels, but by story and setting. A dram by a winter fire tastes different from one sipped by the sea. The same whisky shared among friends transforms with conversation and context.

Food pairing, tasting rituals, and even collection trends are part of the broader culture. And yes, while collectors chase investment-grade bottles, the true heart of whisky lies in drinking it, appreciating the moment, not just the label.

Which Whisky Is Right for You?

Whether you’re searching “what is the best whisky to buy?” or “which whisky is smoothest for beginners?”, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best whisky is the one that resonates with your palate and your story.

So explore. Taste broadly. Discover a smoky Scotch, a sweet bourbon, a floral Japanese pour, or a spicy rye, and let each bottle tell its tale.

In the end, the question isn’t “Which whisky is best?” but rather “Which whisky is best for you, right now?”

And that’s the kind of question worth pouring a glass to ponder.

Meikle Tòir (meaning ‘big pursuit’) Peated Single Malt is carefully crafted and cask-perfected at The GlenAllachie Distillery in Speyside, under the guidance of Master Distiller, Billy Walker. ‘The Original’ is Meikle Tòir’s classic Single Malt, made with mainland peat from St. Fergus, where the flavour contribution is sweeter than that anticipated of coastal peat. With an extended fermentation time of 160 hours, nearly triple the industry average, the whisky boasts flavour-rich, complex character. Aged in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels, American virgin oak casks and rye barrels, the spirit clocks in at 35 PPM. ABV 50%

The GlenAllachie’s peated project, Meikle Tòir (pronounced   MEE-kuhl tor ) has made it to Australia, and The Sherry One is launching officially with the Club this April. For those peat-heads who like their whiskies smoky, hold on to your hats because the barley is peated to approximately 3x Lagavulin levels (equal to a spirit 35 ppm), and is exclusively Club Members in Australia in its official launch. This mega smoke-bomb is likely matching Ardbeg Supernova in its barley ppm and only a puff less than everybody’s favourite, Octomore (120+ ppm). The peat itself is from mainland peat bog, St Fergus. The matter of woody material within...

The Glendalough Distillery places great emphasis on the wood used to mature their whiskey, with countless nuances affecting the flavour, from the straightness of the tree or fineness of the grain to the size of the barrel or depth of the char. Their whiskeys mature in American white oak Bourbon barrels, which lay the flavour foundation that has become the backbone of the Irish whiskey taste. They also finish all of their whiskeys in a second, very different cask. They use Spanish Oloroso sherry butts to finish their Double Barrel, Dublin porter barrels for their 7-year-old single malt, and legendary Mizunara oak for their 13-year-old...

“Allardice,” the namesake for the 18-Year-Old Glendronach under review, comes from “Allardes,” which is the last name of the founder of this fine Highland distillery. It’s hard to believe that GlenDronach opened its doors way back in 1826. That’s almost two hundred years ago! On that same year, the internal combustion engine was first patented. Ludwig van Beethoven was composing his famous scores. And, last but not least…in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Mr. James Allardes was busy at work perfecting the fine art of distilling single malt Scotch whisky. A bottle of very old whisky can literally serve as a time capsule, at least for whisky...

The Glenfarclas operation is large, boasting the biggest stills in Speyside and the biggest mashtun in the industry. Great care has been taken, at the expense of forgoing more cost-effective modern technologies, to ensure that the whisky’s flavour remains consistent over the decades. Their stills are some of the few that are heated in the traditional manner by direct fire (from gas burners) rather than internal electric elements. The distillery experimented with elements the early 80s, but found that this method changed the flavour of the spirit and the experiment was canned, the spirit being sold off to blenders. Cask strength whiskies have not always been available to the general public. In fact, the very idea was incidental, and only materialised in 1968 when a fourth generation member of the Grant family bottled a single cask straight from the warehouse, and sent the bottles to family and friends as Christmas gifts. George S. Grant created a simple, hand written label for the bottles noting only the name of the distillery and the strength of the whisky (which happened to be 105 British Proof.) By the end of January the recipients requested further bottles. George obliged, and since then, Glenfarclas 105 has gone onto become one of the most...

Famous as one of Speyside’s biggest, most masculine whiskies and one of Scotland's most richly Sherry-influenced expressions, Glenfarlcas 15 will have lovers of traditional Macallan bottlings reminiscing. This whisky has been matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the Sherry. Jim Murray describes Glenfarclas 15 as one of Scotland’s most sublime malts with a rating of 95 points, amongst the highest he awards.
